Tourism education lost young people – Ronja Rissanen was not frightened by the industry’s turbulence: \”You don’t know about the world, but you have to think positively\”

There is no immediate relief in sight for the labor shortage in the tourism industry, as education is not gaining traction. For example, in Rovaniemi, instead of the usual two groups, one small group started.

The uncertainty of the tourism industry came to the fore with the pandemic, when hotels and restaurants were closed in the middle of the boom. From the speed of a hundred to the wall, the situation in Lapland was described at that time.

In addition to the loss of employees, the consequences of the turbulence can be seen as a drop in the number of applicants for tourism education. While in 2018 there were almost 700 primary applicants for the joint application for the bachelor’s degree in tourism, this year there were around 450 of them.

In Rovaniemi, the drop was even steeper.

Even at Espoo Omni, the number of primary applicants for the joint application fell by almost half, at Turku Vocational Institute, on the other hand, there was only a slight decrease. The number of adult students coming through the continuous search has also decreased, although not as sharply as the number of young people thinking about their first profession.

– The decision was left to the last straw, the joint search was about to expire and we had to find a field. Different fields were presented at the school and that’s why the field of tourism rose above the others.

Rissanen’s interest was piqued by the idea of work close to people, where no two days are the same.

Tourism is said to be interesting, but it does not appear in the search statistics

– The industry needs educated people. Sure, some jobs are such that you can get by without training, but yes, training is very important.

The organization has established \”attraction working groups\” in different parts of Finland to think about, for example, how to attract high school students to the field. Lappi states that the tourism industry has always done well in surveys of young people.

– But we have to work so that people actually go into this field.

The rescue service has brought a large factory fire under control in Lahti

The fire that broke out on the roof of the production facility produced a lot of smoke.

The Päijät-Häme rescue service was alerted of a large fire at half past three. According to Packalén, the fire department was on the scene very quickly after the alarm at the factory located in the Möysä district.

The picture shows a map on which the city of Lahti and the Stalatube factory are marked. The Stalatube factory is located east of the center of Lahti.

The personnel got out of the building safely and the visible fire was extinguished after three. The rescue service is still investigating whether the fire has spread to the structures.

– After that, we can examine the damage caused by the fire. Over the course of the evening, it will become clear whether we will be able to continue production in part of the hall. In the morning, we are even wiser when we get to examine the machines, CEO Packalén says.

The rescue service was called to the scene at half past three on Tuesday afternoon. The fire department got the fire under control quickly.

Around 70 people work in three shifts at the factory. Provisions have been made for emergencies.

– If these fire safety issues, sprinklers, alarm systems and personnel training had not been in order, the situation could have been worse, Packalén states.

The CEO hopes that work at the factory could be resumed as soon as possible, because the company’s order book is good, and according to forecasts, it is on track to achieve a record turnover in its history.

The financial year of the 2021–2022 season of the background group of the Ice Hockey League team Pelicans was profitable. The result of the entire Pelicans group was more than 700,000 euros. Turnover increased by 36 percent from the previous year.

According to the release of the Lahtel club, both Pelicans Oy and Pelicans Ravintolat Oy, responsible for hockey operations, made a profit.

Pelicans lost income due to the corona restrictions, but the group also received about 1.2 million euros in social support. The club was also helped by the previous season’s financial restructuring, such as a capital loan guaranteed by the owners.

Pelicans aims to increase the operating profit also in the financial period that has started by looking for new business partners throughout the province.

Pentti Attila has donated blood 466 times: \”Hopefully, young people will be inspired to donate when I’m out of the picture\”

There are currently too few blood donors. There is a shortage of men in particular. Pentti Attila from Lahti will stop donating blood because he will soon be too old.

The blood service is constantly in need of new and regular blood donors.

For example, young women donate blood the most in Lahti, but there is especially a shortage of regular male donors.

He donated his last bag of blood at the Lahti Blood Service on Monday. Attila turns 71 on Sunday. The donor’s upper age limit is 70 years.

– It feels good when I have been able to help many people. I hope the young people will be inspired to give up when I get out of these patterns.

Attila calculates that he has donated a total of more than 250 liters of blood during his life.

– I have all the handover slips saved. The longest break was when I spent part of my time in Germany. I didn’t go regularly then.

The blood service has room for new donors

According to the Blood Service of the Finnish Red Cross, 113,000 people registered to donate blood in Finland last year. About 60 percent of them were women.

On average, a blood donor donates blood once or twice a year.

About 3.5 percent of Finns of blood donation age, i.e. 18-70 year olds, donate blood.

SPR reminds that donating blood is safe and in the hands of professionals.

New blood donors are constantly needed. According to the Blood Service, there are currently too few blood donors overall. In particular, even more men are wanted to surrender.

A larger number of active blood donors than at present is also important to ensure security of supply in all conditions and changing situations. In addition, every day some of those who previously donated blood have to stop donating blood, for example due to illness or aging.

You can donate blood for the first time between the ages of 18 and 59. You can easily test your blood donation suitability on the SPR’s Blood Service website.

Blood products help many

Pentti Attila is involved in the activities of the Blood Donors group, but now it’s time for new things.

– I will continue to speak in favor of donating blood. And you don’t know that if in the future I will be on the receiving end, for example due to surgery.

Pentti Attila hopes that those younger than him would be motivated to donate more blood.

The blood donated at the Lahti Blood Service goes to Helsinki, where it is divided into three parts: red cells, platelets and plasma. Products are distributed to hospitals according to orders.

– For example, cancer patients, surgery patients, accident victims and small premature babies receive blood products, says the responsible nurse Satu Koskela.

_You can discuss the topic until Wednesday 31 August 2022 at 11 pm._
