Drones, which were tried as a means of expulsion, were given up for the end of summer, so that the chicks do not get separated from their mothers.
In Lahti, the use of drones in expelling geese has been abandoned for the time being. In collaboration with Inspis ry, Lahti is experimenting with soft ways to expel white-fronted geese in Ankkurinpuisto and Mukkula manor park.
Drones have been used for evicting since the beginning of summer, and the method seemed to be working well. However, after the chicks hatched, the goose patrols moved to drive the birds away from the shores on foot, because it is easier to guide the mother and the chicks together in the same direction.
During the summer, the city has also opened goose fences in some places at the request of the authority that supervises, i.e., the ely center, so that the chicks would not be separated from their parents. The white-cheeked geese must not be completely prevented from eating.
The so-called goose patrols also clean up goose droppings. The experiment will be summarized and its results will be evaluated in the fall.

Kinos Property Investment, which previously reserved the plot, is considering whether it should still start implementing the project. The plot reservation for the movie theater expired in the summer.

The city of Lahti plans to look for new operators who might be interested in the Ranta-Kartano entertainment center lot.
Kinos Property Investment company’s plot reservation expired in the summer, so the future construction of the place is open again. The company is currently considering whether it will, for its part, take the project forward again. So far, construction has been left behind first by the corona pandemic and then by the war in Ukraine and the year of rising construction costs.
According to Alho, the city should also look at the issue from the point of view of building sports facilities. One thing to be considered in the next few years will be whether to renovate the current city ice rink or whether a new multipurpose hall is needed in Lahti. However, the Ranta-Kartano plot does not necessarily lend itself to any use.
– That would also require private financing, which is not an easy equation. Ranta-Kartano is also a cramped place, Alho reflects.
The city is also waiting for a report to be completed soon (https://yle.fi/uutiset/3-12194969), which includes information on, among other things, which areas in Lahti are of interest to hoteliers.
Finland’s big high schools are getting bigger and smaller ones are getting smaller. In Lahti, a new high school started its semester on Wednesday, where more than 1,300 high school students study.
One of Finland’s largest high schools has started operations in Lahti. Tiirismaa and Kannas high schools have merged into Lahti high school Gaudia, where 1,310 high school students study. There are almost a hundred employees. On Wednesday morning, all students arrived at the campus in Paavola for the joint opening of the academic year on time and in good order.
– There are so many people. It makes me wonder if anyone will be found here, Nurminen thinks.
– It’s not very nice, but this will work, guesses Liedes.
Liukko is sad that there is no room for a car. There is no parking space in the high school grounds and the nearest parking place is for a fee.
Gaudia high school urges students to appeal to the decision-makers, so that Gaudia students also have the opportunity for cheap or free parking near their own high school.
Mikaela Tikander and Tua Korhonen are studying their last year of high school in the new high school.
– At least there are more teachers and facilities. The course selection is also better.
– Only parking spaces are a problem. We had 60 mopeds parked, while there are 20 spaces. There wasn’t even a parking space for cars and ATVs in the area of \u200b\u200bthe high school, laments Rosti.
All 1,300 students were invited to the opening of Gaudia’s school year. Shoes had to be taken off at the door so the new floor wouldn’t be ruined.
The differentiation of high schools has continued throughout the 21st century
The average number of students in upper secondary schools is currently 280 students. The size of the ten largest upper secondary schools has grown from more than 500 to more than 650 students in 20 years. Meanwhile, the smallest tenth of upper secondary schools now have less than 50 students instead of the previous 90
There are few high schools with more than a thousand students. In addition to Lahti, there are also large high schools in the capital region and Jyväskylä.
In Värri’s opinion, it is unlikely that new high schools will be created in Finland in the next few years. A large high school is often created by merging two educational institutions, and in many localities the possible mergers have already been done.
– If it is possible in terms of facilities, large high schools will be created to a limited extent. But several high schools with 1,300 students will not be born in the next few years, says Värri.
A student sick with corona should stay at home for a few days. Lahti city schools offer learning support if the absence is prolonged.
If a schoolchild in the family has flu symptoms, the corona test can be done at home. Illustration picture.
– Now that schools are starting, contacts will increase and it is likely that the number of corona infections will also increase, Nieminen states.
The current instruction is that a student infected with the corona virus stays at home for at least five days. The sick person should be relatively symptom-free two days before returning to school. Infection can be detected with a home test if even mild symptoms appear.
According to the review published on Tuesday, 28 patients with corona are being treated at Päijät-Häme Central Hospital. Some are in treatment precisely because of the corona disease, while some are in the hospital for other reasons and they also have a corona infection. There are no corona patients in intensive care.

A Lapland safari company has made moose hunting a profitable business. Many tourists want to meet Europe’s largest land mammal, but only a few organize tours.
Five young Dutch men stare impassively out of the window of a moving minibus in the middle of the dark Tervola forest. The group has paid hundreds of euros for a late-night excursion to see the king of the Finnish forest, the moose.
But the moose lets himself wait. No one can know for sure where a wild forest animal is hiding right now. Still, the driver is sure that moose will be seen. Tourists have been given a guarantee.
The red minibus travels along Kätkävaara’s forest roads and kinttupaths. We didn’t set off until a little before nine in the evening, because the August dusk is the best time to see hornbills.
You don’t go into the forest on foot, but you move all the time in a car, the sound of which is neutral for elk.
Central Europeans like moose: \”An impressive sight\”
The tourism company Lapland Welcome has been organizing elk bonga safaris for 25 years and most of the locals still don’t know about the service. The safaris are aimed at tourists who want to see Europe’s largest land-dwelling mammal.
In Tervolala, the operation has been profitable: from May to September, tourists flock to the forests almost every day. During the summer, approximately 600 customers have time to visit.
An essential part of the safari is to share information about Finland’s nature and its animals. Here we stopped to examine the vesakos eaten by the moose. …
Great trivia quiz – test your knowledge about pollinators!
Pollinators are vital, but endangered. Their decrease threatens e.g. food production. Test your knowledge of fluffies!
Some of the questions or statements in the test are certainly familiar, but getting full marks can be challenging. \r\n Please note that some questions have more than one correct answer.
During the Save the Fluffy campaign, Yle Luonto published a large number of articles and other material to help pollinators.
Make a paradise for the furry ones: Here are 8,101 pollinator plants that are also a joy for humans
Pollinating insects need water and pollen for food. When you grow pollinator-friendly flowers in your yard, you also ensure a bountiful harvest of fruit trees and berry bushes.
The most important thing when planning balcony or yard plantings is to choose flowers so that there is enough food for the fluffy ones from early spring until autumn. This way, people also have enough eye candy for the whole summer.
Although most flowers attract pollinators, not all flowers are created equal. Highly cultivated flowers with many layers of petals may not produce any nectar at all.
In plantings, it is good to prefer simple flowers, preferably those that can also be found naturally in Finland. Such flowers are much better able to withstand the changing summer heat and are therefore easy to take care of.
At the nursery, you have to be careful that no pesticides have been used to grow the seedlings, because they are also dangerous for pollinators. If possible, prefer seedlings grown in your home country.
