The world’s first podcast in Koltan Sámi was published – who can call Koltan Sámi their mother tongue?

In the first episode of the Mâʹst jiõm mainsteʹče aäkkain podcast (What I wouldn’t talk about with grandma), the awkward situation of the mother tongue is discussed and who can call the Koltan Sámi language their mother tongue.

Many have lost their knowledge of the Koltan Sámi language during their time, because it has been believed that the Finnish language will do better in society. For this reason, in many families only Finnish has been spoken to the children.

However, Harju wanted to teach his own child the language of his family – Koltan Sámi, and studied the language as an adult.

– People think a lot about how to prove that a child is a native speaker or not. It’s the kind of thing you shouldn’t have to ask, Harju reflects.

Being a native speaker divides opinion – however, there are only a handful of speakers

Determining mother tongue divides opinion. Some people think that it is not possible to start speaking Sámi as a first language to a child if it is not one’s first language learned. Others, on the other hand, want to speak the lost language of the family, so that the knowledge of the Koltan Sámi language will continue from one generation to the next.

Jyväskylä Sinfonia is giving concerts more and more often without a conductor – the orchestra shares conducting responsibility with the string quartet

Jyväskylä Sinfonia abandoned the traditional conductor model and is testing shared leadership. Starting this fall, the artistic responsibility will be shared with the main guest, the string quartet Meta4.

Jyväskylä Sinfonia has 120 jobs per year. 25 of them are full-scale symphony concerts. In the new model, Meta4 will produce and conduct four concerts a year until spring 2024. In other concerts, the orchestra is led by guest conductors.

– Four people can communicate in many different directions at the same time and take care of many different parts, reflects cellist Djupsjöbacka.

The new model also brings out musically different perspectives.

– When someone has a certain opinion on the matter and someone adds another opinion, then you get a lot of power.

Painter Marjatta Tapiola’s exhibition in Lahti is a dive that made her feel sick and have nightmares

Marjatta Tapiola’s art exhibition called In other words is a reckoning. It forced him to remember tough experiences and difficult life stages.

In the *Self-Portrait* painting (1984), the artist has a tense expression on his face: his hands and his whole being depict complete powerlessness, the fear of not surviving.

– Although I have always tried to do what I want, I have often encountered various obstacles related to my gender, says the painter.

Marjatta Tapiola has returned to nine works from her youth and painted new interpretations of them. The works are on display at the Lahti Visual Arts Museum in Malva.
