The soil in the Isku block has been spoiled in some places – cleaning work is necessary before building a new one

A low red brick commercial building stands in winter Lahti. It's about the Isku store.
Demolition work is scheduled to start next spring on the Isku plot of the buildings behind the furniture store.

Häme ELY Center estimates that there are 180 tons of contaminated soil. The first demolition works will start on the plot of land in the central part of Lahti next spring.

The contaminated soil of the Isku quarter must be cleaned in Lahti before new construction can be done on it.

In the area bounded by Kauppakatu, Seponkatu, Saimaankatu and Sammonkatu, there has been business and industrial activity for decades, as a result of which the soil has been contaminated with metals in places, says Häme ELY center in its release.

There is an estimated 180 tons of contaminated soil. The soil must be excavated so that it does not hinder the future use of the area and that harmful substances in the soil do not migrate into the groundwater or other environments.

SV Portfolio Oy, which owns the properties, is responsible for cleaning.

Demolition to make way for housing construction will begin in the spring

In the next 5-7 years, mostly high-rise buildings will be built in the area, the tallest of which would be a 16-story tower block.

– Housing demand in Lahti has become more uncertain and interest rates have risen. Things will be clarified in the spring, says Dahlblom.
