See the YLE counter how much an extra holiday would pay for you – a four -day working week is still an exception
A large proportion of Finns could compromise on their salary if the workload was reduced. However, only a few are trapped in permanent four -dayness.
The four -day working week is desired in working life, but still quite rare.
Almost 40 % of Finns would, at least to some extent, be prepared to compromise on their salary, if the working time were reduced, the EVA survey of EVA will explain.
Still, few choose to shorten their work week permanently.
We found out why a four -day working week is not more popular.
A dream of relieving can run into the economy
There are many employees in Finland whose salary is not enough to live. If all the roads go to mandatory expenses, it is not possible to drop income by Satas.
By doing one day less, net pay will not fall by a fifth, as taxes are reduced.
In addition to net revenue, the pension pot will decrease if you work for a long time for only four days.
Riikka Kantola took an additional day for himself
Although the caregiver’s salary is not high, the decision did not cause any financial concerns as he has been accurate about his money.
On holidays, he is resting, seeing friends and godparents, and cottages.
Extra leave has also brought good to the employer because Kantola finds that he is physically able to do better. Starting joint problems and migraine have made it easier.
– You don’t have to eat so much painkillers. In my opinion, sick leave has also decreased.
Kantola has done shorter working hours for more than a year, but does not know if he intends to continue his four -day career.
Working life is built to five days
There is no information on the prevalence of a four -day working week in Finland. It is known that there is less part-time work than in many European countries, such as the Netherlands and Sweden.
In many jobs, permanent employees working four days a week are a rule reinforcing exception. The rarity depends on the industry. For example, in the trade and restaurant sector, different part-time times are common, which is rarely the will of the employee.
Usually people do a four -day week for a fixed period. Four -day is asked, for example, for partial family leave, their own health or study. In many cases, the employee receives support from the state in addition to his salary.
According to researchers, a major obstacle to the prevalence of a four -day working week is a Finnish work culture.
The social and economic situation affects the attitudes of employers. In some areas, there is a lack of expertise, but Finnish companies still have no widespread pressure to attract workers through flexible working hours.
The supervisor decides whether or not four -day or not
We asked ten large employers for guidelines for four -day working weeks. Few places had been made in general.
Under the Working Time Act, the employer must try to organize work so that the employee can work part-time if he or she so wishes for social or health. Still, refusal is possible.
The four -day working week will almost invariably cause additional arrangements for the employer. So it is left to the supervisor’s discretion whether the disadvantage is too large or not.
Smaller companies are not enthusiastic about the four -day working week of the entire work community. A couple of years ago, in a survey commissioned by Finnish Entrepreneurs, nearly 60 percent of entrepreneurs said they didn’t want to try four -day even the salary of employees.
– The organization of the work has mainly been found to work. The starting point is that work is done in most of the five days.
Family leave made it to consider extra leave
Friday is a day of Männistö and less than two -year -old daughter. Then Männistö takes care of the family’s toddler and makes Friday cleaning.
The idea of \u200b\u200ban additional day was born at home on family leave. The job description of Männistö is new, so there has been no problem in four days.
Männistö enjoys his third holiday and dreams of continuing four days. However, money comes into the patterns. Currently, Männistö receives support from Kela, so income has not fallen much.
– A four -day working week attracts. It feels more balanced to focus on four days to work, and then there are three days other things.
Instead of four -day hurry away
Experts are wondering about the promotion of a four -day working week.
– In Finland, it is quite moderate working hours if compared to the rest of Europe. The holidays are quite good. From the point of view of a working time researcher, I doubt a little about why it would be in Finland to have a four -day working week, says Anniina Ropponen from the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health.
Many work time experiments found that the hurry increased. According to experts, reducing a working day is not the best medicine for the feeling that working life is within the limits of coping.
Together, work communities would have to find ways to reduce hurry.
– You should apply for porosity for a working day. Trying to see food breaks and afternoon coffee as prestigious things that have a genuine place.
