The recession is approaching, but the RV company will break records next year

According to forecasts, the Finnish economy will slip into recession next year. According to Suomen Yrittäjie, the situation is brighter for many companies than the headlines suggest. Strong balance sheets and buffers protect companies in difficult times.

The year ending has been excellent for the touring car company Touring Cars.

Touring Cars is a Finnish family business that imports, sells, rents and maintains motorhomes. The company was founded in Kuopio 40 years ago.

Saarnio has spent almost his entire working career working with motorhomes. He moved to the company’s bread in 1989 after first working as an interpreter in Siberia. Now he manages a company of 18 people from Vantaa, where the current headquarters is located.

The pandemic brought a rush of domestic customers

The corona pandemic had become the fate of Touring Cars. It briefly wiped out the largest group of renters, foreign tourists.

\”Taxis should drive tourists rather than Kela rides\” – the emergency room is congested at Lapland’s central hospital when there are no Kela taxis

A taxi parked in front of Lapland's central hospital, an unidentified person in the background.
Roller coasters are operated by two companies in Rovaniemi. If they don’t have a ride to offer, the patient can order a ride himself and bill the ride companies.

This year, Kela has already sanctioned badly maintained Kela rides worth 200,000 euros. Taxi companies admit that chauffeuring tourists is more profitable than reel rides.

According to Loimu, patients may have to wait for a taxi to leave the hospital for several hours, sometimes the ride has not come at all.

– This is not only a problem for the emergency room, but also for the departments, Loimu says.

Rides are simply not available.

– This is a daily challenge for us. It may be that the patient is ready for treatment with us, and a place for further treatment has been found, but he has to wait several hours just for the taxi to arrive, says Loimu.

The icebreaker Sampo, the number one tourist destination in Kemi, is not in use due to engine failure – a backup vessel will come to the rescue

Kemi's tourism icebreaker Sampo Veitsiluoto in the harbor.
The icebreaker Sampo will remain in port for the time being.

The reserve vessel M. S. Kökar will be commissioned on Sunday. Tourists can first get to know Sampo and then the reserve ship will take them on a cruise.

The broken icebreaker Sampo is now being feverishly tried to be repaired. According to estimates, the repairs can be done by mid-January.

The spare vessel brought to the rescue from Turku will take tourists on cruises and ice rafting until Sampo is operational again. The cruises are carried out in such a way that travelers first visit Sampo and then the reserve vessel takes them out to sea.

M.S. Kökar can take 150 tourists, while Sammo’s cruise can accommodate 180 tourists.

– Financial losses from cancellations of customer cruises amount to hundreds of thousands. This is also a disadvantage for trade relations. The cost estimate for Sampo’s repair is still open, but the biggest losses come from canceled cruises.

Traffic at Oulu and Kuusamo airports is gradually picking up after the high season

Welcome to Oulu advertisement at Oulu airport.
Passenger numbers at Oulu Airport are on the rise again after years of low interest rates. Kuusamo is already hitting normal figures in the run-up to the Christmas season.

The number of air passengers is still well below the level before the interest rate. On average, the number of passengers this year has been around two-thirds of what it was before the pandemic.

At Oulu airport, a few million-dollar clubs were reached before the koruna. In 2019, a total of 1 064 917 passengers passed through the airport. During the koruna, passenger numbers plummeted by about a third, to just over 300 000 passengers in both years.

During this year, the number of passengers has gradually increased, and by the end of November, Oulu Airport had already welcomed 590,223 passengers.

Kuusamo Airport had 80 768 passengers by the end of November. Before the koruna, 115 091 passengers passed through Kuusamo Airport. In the years before the koruna, the 70 000 passenger mark was still exceeded. December has traditionally been a busy month in Kuusamo, which has also been reflected in the year’s total.

Kuusamo station’s traffic in November, together with Ivalo, Kittilä, and Rovaniemi airports, differed from the situation in the rest of the country, as the number of passengers exceeded the 2019 level in November.
