The Sunclass Airlines flight from Kuopio to Gran Canaria had to make an extra stop in Stockholm on Wednesday. According to Finavia, the weather rarely hinders smooth operations.

Air passengers departing from Kuopio have been confused by the holiday flight to Gran Canaria the other night, which did not get enough fuel for its journey.

The Sunclass Airlines flight that left Kuopio had to make an extra refueling stop at Arlanda Airport in Stockholm. However, the situation did not pose a danger to the passengers.

The flight distance from Kuopio to Gran Canaria is about 6,000 kilometers. With the a321 airplanes used by Sunclass Airlines, you could only fly about 1,500 kilometers further with a full tank. Even a relatively small shortfall in refueling therefore causes the need for a stopover.

The vacationers finally reached their destination a good two hours behind schedule.

Further funding from the state is being sought for the flights in the five provinces

The current contract for scheduled flights to Kajaani, Kemi, Kokkola, Joensuu and Jyväskylä ends in July. Extending the flights until the end of April 2024 would require an allocation of 17 million euros.

Continued funding for air traffic at provincial airports is sought from the state’s additional budget.

The contract of Kajaani, Kemi, Kokkola, Joensuu and Jyväskylä airports for flights to Helsinki expires at the end of July, but by using the option, an extension could be obtained until the end of April 2024. An allocation of 17 million euros would be needed for the option.

Earlier, Finnair announced that it would focus on strong domestic flight connections, and the company is not interested in commercial operation of regional flights without government support.

According to Malinen, the additional budget is the most urgent and important issue to be resolved. At the same time, we are trying to influence that Finnair, which won the flight competition, would also continue flights during the additional funding period. Until now, Finnair’s message has been clear.

The chief infectious disease doctor needs an assessment of the risks of the corona virus spreading in China from the world’s major health organizations

Markku Broas, the new infection doctor of the Länsi-Pohja hospital district
Chief infectious disease doctor Markku Broas wants STM’s position on whether it would be reasonable to test Chinese tourists coming to Finland for the corona virus.

In Finland, the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health should take a position on whether pre-testing of Chinese tourists is necessary, according to senior infectious disease doctor Markku Broas.

Already fifty countries around the world require a negative corona test from Chinese tourists coming to the country. On Wednesday, Italy became the first in Europe to impose a corona test as a condition for Chinese tourists to enter the country.

– STM should definitely take a position on whether it makes sense to test tourists coming from China in advance, says Broas.

On Tuesday, China announced the lifting of travel restrictions, and Finland will soon start to see Chinese tourists as well after a long time. Corona is spreading fast in China, but possible new troublesome variants have not yet been encountered.

– Yes, it is something that must be followed very carefully. There are risks involved, that’s for sure, says senior infectious disease doctor Markku Broas.

Chinese authorities allow travel from China to other countries again.

In Lapland, the news that the Chinese authorities intend to allow tourism abroad again has been received with joy. However, a quick and spectacular return of Chinese tourists is not expected.

For example, Finnair estimates that the demand for flights to China will start to recover at the turn of January-February for business travelers. According to Finnair, next summer will again be a turning point in Chinese leisure travel.

Finnair has already held negotiations to restore flights to China that were canceled due to the corona virus. More capacity will also come due to the removal of location restrictions.

Nina Forsell, Executive Director of the Lapland Tourism Industry Association
Nina Forsell estimates that the Chinese will probably return to Lapland in droves only next winter.

– First of all, it will take time to increase the number of flights. Another thing is how many other customers the companies already have. Is there necessarily even room for large groups now?

Hanko Plagen beach in winter.
Hanko’s Plagen beach – and the entire town – is quiet in winter.

Hanko’s winter is enlivened especially by leisure residents, but more and more often also by occasional tourists. Next summer is almost fully booked in several lodgings.

The door of the red brick bank building built on Hanko Boulevard in 1903 is invitingly open.

Kukkonen has just returned from Spain and recounts the events of the trip. Piiroinen and Parkkonen listen carefully and ask more questions.

– This bank is supposed to be a creative meeting place for people from Hanko. I think there is an order for this specifically during the off-season, Piiroinen estimates.
