Montreal sets out a framework for living in harmony with nature – these are the things Finland wants to see in the negotiations

Finland and the European Union have led the way on many of the important themes of the conference, but there are also conservation actions where the ambition is higher in other parts of the world.

Negotiations entered their second week today. So far, the meeting has decided on executive and technical issues. The real bone of contention will be on the table, especially in the high-level phase starting on Thursday.

– There will be a result here, that’s for sure,” says von Weissenberg.

Finland participates in the negotiations as part of the European Union. It is particularly important for both Finland and the EU that the package is balanced, especially in terms of its four major goals:

What does Finland want from the agreement?

One of the key goals of the EU and Finland as the negotiations progress is to pressure the rest of the world into the goals that are already included in the Union’s biodiversity strategy.

Barred owl has its moment of destiny – a predator that delighted in Central Finland has been tube-fed

The Lapland municipality is considering a total deer cull – Savukoski residents are worried about population decline

In Savukoski, people are worried about the deer loss. There have been few antelope this autumn. Illustration.

The Savukoski delegation will leave for Helsinki on Monday morning to meet the minister and the members of parliament.

– The decision still needs more facts about the density of the moose,” Pienimaa says.

– In 2019, we still had 1 100 moose. This autumn, there are no moose, which means that the number of permits has been far too high. With the hunting season now so long, the elk are being killed too efficiently.

According to Pienimaa, it would be a good idea to do an aerial count in order to find out if there is a deer cover. It is planned with the Centre for Natural Resources for January.

A group of four of Savukoski’s municipal decision-makers will meet the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry and MPs from various parties in Helsinki on Monday and Tuesday.

Dugongs, or mermaids and abalone, are now on the brink of extinction

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) reports on the deteriorating situation of large marine mammals and other marine species. Overfishing, climate change and pollution are the causes of the plight of many species.

The dugong, or sea lamprey, and 44% of abalone species are threatened with extinction. In addition, column corals are now critically endangered.

Numerous human activities are disturbing and threatening marine species, says the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Illegal and unsustainable fishing, pollution, climate change and disease are threatening marine life around the world.

The IUCN today announced new updates to its list of threatened animal and plant species. The so-called Red List now includes 150,388 species, of which 40,108 are threatened with extinction. Of the 17 903 species of marine flora and fauna, 1 550 are threatened with extinction. According to the IUCN, climate change is affecting at least 41% of endangered species.

The sea lion is becoming endangered

The dugong populations of East Africa and New Caledonia are especially in the danger zone, the IUCN says. Globally, the dugong is also endangered, but not in such a bad situation. There are less than 250 dugong individuals in East Africa and less than 900 in New Caledonia.

The Ely Centre uses game cameras to monitor the flood situation. Archive photo.

The Agency is working to prevent flooding, for example by reducing run-off.

According to the South Ostrobothnia Environment Centre, there is already water in the rapids and the water level above them has risen in some places.

The Agency is working to prevent the formation of silt by reducing water run-off, for example from Lake Evijärvi, and by installing silt ropes at six locations.

The Agency has also reduced the flow from Lappajärvi.

The situation on the river is monitored with game cameras and terrain inspections.
