The preliminary investigation was launched on the basis of observations made by Metsähallitus’ wildlife surveillance. The investigation has revealed that the hunting party has killed several deer without the required hunting permits.
The Oulu Police Department and the Kainuu Border Guard are investigating suspected elk poaching in Puolanka and Hyrynsalmi.
Several moose are suspected to have been shot in violation of permit conditions this autumn during the moose hunt. The case is being investigated as an aggravated hunting offence and concealing illegal prey. In connection with the criminal investigation, the police are also conducting an investigation under the Firearms Act.
Several people have been detained during the investigation. A hunting club in North Savo is suspected of the crime.

A serious hunting crime can be sentenced to imprisonment for a minimum of four months and a maximum of four years. Hiding illegal catch can be sentenced to a fine or imprisonment for a maximum of one year.
