The Ely Centre has established the area on the initiative of Nokia.

Nokia Oyj applied for the area to be protected as part of the Gift of Nature campaign, which will be implemented until the end of this year. In the campaign, in exchange for the areas protected by private landowners without compensation, the state transfers an area of its own land for protection. Transfers from state lands will be carried out during the next year.

Nokia has already established protected areas in the past. In 1987, Nokia established a conservation area on the lands of the Båtvik manor in the Siunti sea area. In 2009, the company established a conservation area in the marshes of Harjasuon-Laurinkorvi in Kuusamo.
