The Savukoski delegation will leave for Helsinki on Monday morning to meet the minister and the members of parliament.

– The decision still needs more facts about the density of the moose,” Pienimaa says.

– In 2019, we still had 1 100 moose. This autumn, there are no moose, which means that the number of permits has been far too high. With the hunting season now so long, the elk are being killed too efficiently.

According to Pienimaa, it would be a good idea to do an aerial count in order to find out if there is a deer cover. It is planned with the Centre for Natural Resources for January.

A group of four of Savukoski’s municipal decision-makers will meet the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry and MPs from various parties in Helsinki on Monday and Tuesday.

Before the start of the current hunting season, the municipality of Savukoski made a proposal to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Finnish Game Center that deer hunting in September would only be allowed for locals or that it would be banned completely in September.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry says that the Savukoski municipality’s proposal is still being processed. The matter will be clarified before the start of next autumn’s hunting season.

Savukoski has been bothered by the hunting of out-of-towners on state lands.

Kari Kilpimaa says that the people of Savukoski want to stop early deer hunting, at least in the area of \u200b\u200bSavukoski municipality.

– I believe that the rest of Lapland will also follow the same path after these experiences.

According to Kari Kilpimaa, early moose hunting is a waste of resources, when reindeer and moose calves grow and get stronger in early autumn.

– When September is targeted for heavy hunting with dogs, it causes great damage to both the moose population and the reindeer herd.

According to Kilpimaa, it can be seen in the way that the reindeer are scattered and it is difficult to gather them together. In addition to that, a moose weighs only about 50 kilos in September, while a month later it can already weigh 80–90 kilos.

– It’s absolutely absurd to shoot moose fawns before their time. Later on, we would get bigger calves, also the dams and big bulls would be better saved.

In addition to deer issues, the people of Savukoski want to discuss with the decision-makers about staggered electricity and fuel prices according to the Swedish model.
