Among other things, St. John’s Wort, St. John’s wort and marigold petals are now on the permitted list. Others that have received food status are the leaves, stems and flowers of plantain, cabbage leaves and star anise. On the other hand, the leaves and blossoms of the mesentery may only be used in nutritional supplements and as herbal tea.

In the commercial food use of natural products, it must be ensured that the product is safe and that the use of the natural plant is permitted for the intended use. The status of the plant can change and the current situation can be checked in the EU’s novel food list.
