Luoman’s journalistic career began at Loviisan Sanomat, and at Yle he has worked as a news reporter and producer, among other things.

According to Luoma, the importance of news has only increased over the last couple of years.

– We have lived through turbulent and extraordinary times. It is more important than ever that we succeed every day in communicating world events clearly and in many voices, in a way that increases genuine understanding of ourselves and of others. Of course, in the midst of crises, it is also important to recognise and identify positive developments, so that the overall picture that the news conveys to people is recognisable,” Luoma says.

In Luoma’s opinion, Yle’s news and current affairs delivery is now hit harder than ever before: there is ambition and know-how.

– The corona pandemic and the war in Ukraine have challenged us like all other Finns, but on the other hand, they have also enabled us to learn new things.

According to Luoma, it is necessary to develop ways of telling the news and the news must change along with the people.

– You could perhaps say that news activities will never be finished. For some, the news is Instagram or the yle.fi website, for others half-finished news, for others a news podcast along with a run.

Regarding her new job description, Katariina Luoma has a clear mission.

– I want to influence the fact that, regardless of the medium, we are aware of important issues for the public every day and look for answers to the relevant questions that move people. Let’s do the hard work on behalf of the public and break down even the most complicated things into an understandable form.
