Food and electricity are getting more expensive, but the city’s income is decreasing – Lahti’s education program is a tough nut to crack

Lahti city manager Pekka Timonen is worried about the increase in costs. For example, school personnel may be subject to savings.

A middle-aged, bespectacled man sits casually on a blue sofa in an open office. He wears a dark blue suit with a sky blue tie and a white collared shirt. The man smiles a little.
According to Pekka Timonen, the increase in food and electricity prices causes pressure.

– Yes, we know what has happened and is happening to the price of food. There are other pressures to increase this aspect of education. Schools need a lot of electricity and teachers’ salaries are rising. Yes, it’s a pretty tricky equation, Timonen states.

The situation is causing pressure on the city and thinking about how to keep the runaway costs under control.

Measures to save electricity are currently being considered. You can’t save much on school and daycare food. In the worst case, personnel costs will be the target of cost-saving measures

At least at this stage, layoffs are not yet included in the toolkit.
