A group of real estate developers and investors are applying to the City of Helsinki for a site reservation for a large arena in Suvilahti, Helsinki.

The aim of the project team is to examine the conditions for creating the largest event and multifunctional arena in Northern Europe in terms of spectator capacity in the Suvilahti area.

The group aims to open the arena as early as summer 2027.

A company called Suvilahten Areena Oy has been established to promote the project.

A decommissioned power plant for cultural use?

According to the development reservation application submitted by the project group, the goal of the project is to realize the area as an event and multi-purpose arena with a capacity of 17,000 spectators for concerts and events. In sports events, the spectator capacity of the arena would be around 14,000 spectators.

The spectator capacity of the Tampere arena, which was completed last year, is a good 13,000 for hockey matches and 15,000 for concerts.

According to the development reservation application, the area submitted for reservation is located in the southern part of the Suvilahti event area. It is bounded on the east side by the area reserved for the event block of the Event Hub project, on the south side by Vilhonvuorenkatu and on the west side by the area zoned for the energy company Helen.

The application mentions that the purpose of the project is to study the utilization of the Hanasaari power plant, which will be decommissioned in Helen next year, and possible conversion to cultural and leisure activities.
