Finland desperately needed electricity in the 1960s, and that’s when the construction of the Loka and Porttipahta artificial lakes began in Sodankylä. Five villages and 600 people’s homes, forests and reindeer pastures were left under water. The lives of the people in the area changed forever.
Toimela says that telling fates is important.
– Everything was left under the tanks. Home, livelihood, beloved village and own community. People scattered everywhere, because whole villages didn’t move to a new place.
Built in 1967, the Loka Reservoir became the largest in Europe. It is used to regulate the amount of water needed for Kemijoki’s power plants. The Porttipahta reservoir, which was built at the same time, was connected to Lokka via the Vuotso canal in 1981.
The play _Shores of Darkness_ has its premiere in Korund on Friday evening.
