More than 80 individuals were caught from Ylöjärvi’s cat population in August, but several dozen cats remained in the wild.
What to do with abused, semi-feral cats? What does it cost?
The volunteers of the Cat Corner association had to think about the issue in Pirkanmaa after a herd of more than a hundred semi-feral cats was found in the countryside of Ylöjärvi at the end of August.
More than 80 cats were lured from the herd at one time. Dozens of cats were still left wandering in nature, and they are going to be lured today, Friday. Such a large herd has never come to Kissankulma (http://www.kissankulma.com/) at one time before.
Rescuing the cats and then food, chipping, vaccinations, sterilization and other care is a multi-thousand-euro expense item for the Kissankulma association.
Through the doctor to a new home
All captured cats first get to know a veterinarian. Every Kat has at least two doctor’s visits, and the bill for them is paid by the animal protection association.
– The amount is between two and three hundred euros per cat, but for adult cats, the basic measures are rarely sufficient. And now I’m not counting food expenses here, they’re their own story.
The medical bill can be thousands of euros
In the worst case, one cat’s medical expenses amount to several thousand euros.
– There are dental procedures, maybe more extensive blood samples or intestinal ultrasounds are needed. We receive a lot of cats who have had such a hard early life that their intestines are not in order. Sometimes it is necessary to take X-rays, perform surgical procedures or examine stool samples. The costs can rise to several thousand euros, Kataja calculates.
The average decline of one cat in Ylöjärvi’s population remains a bit more moderate. The cats are quite young and had apparently been fed, so they weren’t in too bad shape.
Cats for sale
The Animal Protection Society gets its money from donations and the sale of found animals to new homes. A cared-for adult in the foundry is given to a new home for 200 euros, a puppy costs 300 euros.
Elina Kataja says that cats don’t keep accounts. All proceeds will be used to save the next cats living – and breeding – in poor conditions.
– We don’t pass on a single uncut cat. We also do not go home, which just states that hello to us, we could perhaps be taken. We interview quite thoroughly and make sure that the cat will definitely be taken care of from now on, says Elina Kataja.
