Last spring, the Ice Hockey World Cup ensured a much better May than normal for many renters. This spring, prices have had to come down.
Last spring, all six apartments were booked up for almost the entire duration of the Ice Hockey World Cup.
Now demand has been much quieter. There are still plenty of Airbnb apartments left in the Tampere city centre. Even right next to the Tampere Arena you can find apartments at a reduced price.
There is still space available in some of the apartments rented by Schmidtink. But his situation is still good, as some of the apartments have been reoccupied by familiar guests from last year’s race. They made a reservation in the middle of last year and will stay in Tampere for a month.
– There is no such thing as last spring. That’s why last year’s prices have also come down clearly, says Schmidt.
Three reasons for the fall in demand
Daniel Schmidt sees three clear reasons for the decrease in demand for accommodation. The first is that this time the World Cup will be held in two different countries.
– The second is that we have now been able to move much more freely for a longer time. Last spring’s games were the first big thing that could be organized after the corona virus, and the demand was downright huge.
The third reason is the prevailing economic situation. As costs increase, there is less money available for extra fun or tourism.
Schmidt reflects that the number of properties for rent may have also increased, as more and more people are trying to get additional income.
Schmidt strongly believes that reservations will also be made during the World Cup. Hockey fans book accommodation every time their team advances from the initial group to the quarterfinals.
Dwindling demand concerns landlords
Some of the apartment renters have made their cancellation policies stricter than last year. The loose cancellation conditions have made it possible for reservations made in time to be canceled depending on the success of the disc even at the last moments, when the renter loses his income.
According to Schmidt, the decline in demand has been discussed a lot in different host communities and social media groups.
The situation is unfortunate, especially for professional hosts. The World Championships guaranteed a much better month last year, as competition tourists enjoyed themselves in Tampere before and after the games, when the need for accommodation stretched to three weeks.
– There are always people who come for certain individual days or weekends, but the World Cup has been an opportunity for exceptionally strong demand for a long time, says Schmidt.

*The matter was corrected on 12.5. 2:10 p.m.: the caption read that Daniel Schmidt is renovating a new Airbnb property. The apartment is not an Airbnb property, but Schmidt’s father’s apartment.*
