The World Nature Foundation, or WWF, will open the popular Norppalive on May 9, 2023, where you can watch the spring molting of the endangered Saimaa norpi. Last year, Norppalive collected millions of views.
WWF’s Norppalive, the world’s nature watchdog, is filming the endangered Saimaa norte for the eighth time. Norppalive opens after midnight on May 9.
Saimaan norpat are very loyal to their place, so Pullervo can very well show off at Norppalive this spring as well.
From the outside, the norpa climbing onto the islet and basking in the sun looks peaceful. However, it’s about shedding, which is one of the most demanding efforts of the year for a nork.
Soaking takes away from work, so take a look from afar
Puppies don’t like to get wet in the middle of a bath.
However, stressful events, such as a boat passing too close or a person approaching with a camera, drive them to drown.
WWF appeals to those moving around Saimaa to keep a distance from the norpi.
Moulting can be disturbed if the ferrets have to dive into the water too often due to a human-caused disturbance.
Millions of views
Norppalive was realized for the first time in 2016. That’s when it gained great popularity and became a kind of phenomenon.
Even though the drug has leveled off after the first year, the popularity is still strong.
– In practice, there has been an audience of millions every year when Norppalive has been implemented, says Joonas Fritze, WWF’s director of communications.
Usually, when a marten comes to a rock, it stays there for a while. Thus, the viewer can follow the norpa’s stay for a long time. You can also tell your friend about it.
– Sometimes the roe gets on the rock and crushes itself, and sometimes it is not on the rock at all. Norppalive is real slow TV, slow entertainment, says Fritze.
Other animals are also interesting
Norppalive is part of WWF’s wider Luontolive service, which transmits live broadcasts from Finnish nature. WWF’s cameras have recorded the life of a wolverine, a vulture, a flying squirrel, a red deer, a toad lizard and lake salmon, among other things, in addition to the norpa.
In total, the broadcasts have already been viewed around 25 million times. Currently, in addition to Norppalive, you can watch skunks, Baltic sea terns and Lapland owls in live broadcasts.
Along with Norppalive, for example, Säksi-live has gained a lot of popularity. The live follow-up, which has been broadcast for about a month, has already collected more than a million views.
– Sääksi-live has also become a real popular favorite. Last year it had more than three million viewers, says Joonas Fritze.
Yle Luonno’s Pesälive also follows the life of gnats. In Pesälive, you can watch Miila and Penna, a pair of gnats from Paltamo, nesting for more than four months.
In addition, norp researchers from the University of Eastern Finland, Metsähallitus nature services and the ELY center of Etelä-Savo are also involved in the collaboration.
The location of the camera is the same as in previous years. Norppalive can be monitored for approximately one month.
