According to the Nature Services, there are already good experiences with rest areas without garbage cans, for example, in Pyhä-Luosto and Salla national parks.
During the spring winter, Metsähallitus’ Nature Services will remove even the last trash cans from Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park’s rest areas and deserted and reserved areas.
Litter-free camping reduces the maintenance of the national park and thus also noise, emissions and soil erosion. Nature services have also noticed that the trash cans themselves attract people to leave trash at rest areas.
However, there are eco points at the starting points of Yllästunturi, Pallastunturi and Tunturi-Lapi nature centers as well as Pyhäjärvi and Totovaara, and it is also allowed to leave bio-waste in the dry toilet of the rest area.
The resources freed up by the removal of garbage cans will be used to improve the services and routes of the national park.
Garbage containers have also been removed from the huts and rest areas of the UK park during the spring. According to the Nature Services, there are already good experiences with rest areas without garbage cans, for example, in Pyhä-Luosto and Salla national parks.
