The size of the final flood peak is determined by the weather conditions during the snowmelt phase. The Ely center combats possible ice dams or flood damage with ice saws in Kalajoki and Pyhäjoki.
The spring floods in the rivers of Northern Ostrobothnia are estimated to be average this year. Based on the current flood forecast, they are scheduled for the period after mid-April.
The size of the final flood peak is determined by the weather conditions during the snowmelt phase. If the thaw happens quickly and there is rain at the same time, the floods may be higher than average.
The ely center of North Ostrobothnia also cuts ice in river areas to prevent ice dams and flood damage. Ice sawing will be carried out this spring on Kalajoki and Pyhäjoki, if the ice thickness allows it. Sawing starts immediately after Easter, it takes 2–3 days.
In Kalajoki, sawing is planned to be done at Vääräjokisuu, Väärät school, Jutilansuvanno and Malisjoki. Sawing places on Pyhäjoki are Kittilänsuvato and Helaakoski.
The use of an ice saw requires about 50 centimeters of steel ice. This winter, however, the ice has been weaker than usual.
