The probability of northern lights in the southern and central parts of the country is still moderate.
The aurora borealis was visible late Sunday evening and in the night between Sunday and Monday all the way to southern Finland.
At midnight, the Finnish Meteorological Institute said on Twitter that the northern lights could be seen in Helsinki, among other places
In central Finland, aurora borealis could also be observed in large areas last night.
Pictures of the sky’s color brilliance have been shared, for example, on the Astronomical Society’s Ursa observation pages, at least from Petäjävedi, Muurame and Jämsä.
The northern lights have also been immortalized in the allsky cameras of the Hankasalmi and Nyrölä observatories of the star hobby association Jyväskylä Sirius ry.
According to the latest forecast of the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s Space Weather Center, the probability of northern lights in the southern and central parts of the country is still moderate.
The increased probability is due to flares on the sun’s surface.
The sun has an eleven year period when it is more and less active, says Oksanen.
– Now we are heading towards sunspot maxima. At maximum, there are many different eruptions from the sun and particles fly from there into space. When the particles collide with the Earth’s atmosphere, we see the aurora borealis. Northern lights will probably be more common than average this, next and even the following winter, describes Osanen.
In Lapland, aurora borealis are common even during calm space weather.
