Advanced technology is particularly attractive to young anglers. Nowadays, you can find a sonar or a smartphone in your backpack.
In addition to the brace, a small digital screen sits on the ice in front of Korhonen. Buying a device worth a few hundred euros was not an obvious choice for a fishing enthusiast.
– I’m also made with more traditional settings, I’ve long been against sonar. However, the world is changing and so is fishing. I finally justified buying a sonar for myself,” Korhonen laughs.
The 32-year-old Korhonen is a good example of the younger generation of pilots. They are particularly attracted to the ice by advanced technology.
Alert users
– From the age of 12 and up, there are well-informed users of technology. Young people are interested in technology, after all, they have been used to it since childhood, says Tarkiainen, who works with the central organization’s youth and family work.
– Young people are interested in fishing as long as activities are organized for them, says Tarkiainen.
Opportunity for fish
According to Tero Korhonen, the two-year-old sonar has already paid for itself many times.
– It brings cheer and hope to ice fishing when you see that there are fish below. After all, they say that the sonar gives a new sense to this job.
In addition to the echo sounder, Korhonen uses phone applications to help ice fishing, from which you can see the bottom shapes of the lake. For longer trips, he also takes a cordless drill and a snowmobile.
– Maybe the next technical aid could be a camera sending a live stream, Korhonen reflects.
