Kaija Koo takes over the Olympic Stadium in August: “Two landmarks meet”

The interpreter of Finnish emotions, “our Kaija”, says the stadium takeover is a natural progression from the big celebrations to the songs.

– I have been working as an interpreter for Finns for more than four decades, so why shouldn’t I go for a big, grand concert like this,” Kaija Koo tells Yle News by phone.

Kaija Koo has previously performed at numerous major festivals and also sold out Hartwall Arena concerts in 2014, 2015 and 2018, so large scale shows are nothing new to her. However, there is a special charm to the Olympic Stadium and it is a kind of magical milestone for many domestic artists.

– The Olympic Stadium was a clear and natural choice for me: it is a place dear to Finns. It is a landmark for the Finns, and you could say that I am a kind of landmark for the Finns too: so here two landmarks meet!

– *Superstadion* has the same feeling, because people have lived with my songs. They have been danced to, married to, funerals celebrated and probably given birth to.

Kaija Koo, who has sold more than half a million albums and has been awarded the Emma, \u200b\u200bstates that she is \”our Kaija\” to Finns. This is also evidenced by the fact that the recently released *Tinakenkäkuningatar* documentary got good viewership numbers and the *Taipumaton* biography published last year also sold well.

– Finns are interested in my journey, because they have been involved in it themselves, for several decades, summarizes the artist.

Surprise visitors and emotional moments

Kaija Koo has succeeded in what many long-established artists often fail to achieve: she has become a permanent favorite among young audiences as well.

– I make music for people, *not* for people of a certain age. This ideology has been the driving force of my career. I consider myself a universal artist with something to offer everyone. And at the end of the day, we humans are quite similar.

Of course, Kaija Koo can’t reveal more details about the *Superstadion*, which will be realized in August, but the plans are already well advanced.

– There are new arrangements as well as surprising guests and lineups. I think that nostalgic and emotional moments are also spent there, so there must be a reason to hand out tissues. Right now I’m buzzing with happiness because I know what to expect.
