Lahti Energia and Nordic Ren-Gas oy have entered into a development agreement for a production plant that would start up by 2026. The final investment decision will be made at a later stage.
Lahti Energia and Nordic Ren-Gas have signed an agreement for a new production plant at the Kymijärvi power plant site.
The new plant will produce renewable methane, green hydrogen and district heating. An environmental impact assessment and permitting of the project has been initiated, with the aim of starting commercial production by 2026.
In its final size, the plant would produce 35 000 tonnes of synthetic methane per year. It will be used in heavy road transport, replacing fossil fuels while reducing carbon dioxide emissions. The process heat generated in the production of the renewable fuel will be used as district heating in Lahti, reducing the need for combustion-based district heating.
According to Kujala, the financing of the project is more certain than before, when the German subsidiary of the Allianz insurance group made an investment in the Finnish company in December. Support funding is still being applied for the project.
