Analysis: the third season of White Lotus was exceptional television in its slowness
Many were disappointed by the hit series White Lotus. But the incredible slowness of the new season was refreshing, writes cultural journalist Anton Vanha-Majamaa.
Boring. Slow. Why is nothing happening? Why should we care about these characters?
The third season of the hugely popular *White Lotus* series ended on Monday to mixed reviews. The season broke previous ratings records for the series, but the reception has been much more muted than before.
The comedy-drama following holidaymakers arriving at a luxury hotel has been criticised above all for its slow pace.
In Metacritic’s user values, the mood has certainly fallen. The second season’s average rate is 8.4/10, with a minor season of 6.3 in the third season.
Holy, I say. * White Lotus* The third season is possibly the best of the whole series. No one else is doing such a TV.
Slowness is the whole point
* White Lotus* started as a black comedy with a risen from reality. In the first season of 2021, a number of wealthy US left for a week’s vacation on Maui Island in Hawaii. The opening scene revealed that one of the holidaymakers would return in the coffin.
The series stretched between the murder mystery and the upper class satire. The story of the plot went parallel with a social commentary.
This seems to have happened. Instead of bumping the elite, the series has dealt more widespread in Western lifestyle. The protagonists are still primarily cigar, but their lifestyle is one that at least a middle -income journalist identifies with.
During the third season, the events were already so subtle that it sometimes felt like nothing would happen in the series.
It’s kind of a point for the whole thing.
Interstitial space
The vacation typically includes a fantasy that a slightly different return from the trip.
White Lotus’s thesis is that we cannot eventually escape ourselves. Therefore, the holiday usually reinforces our perception of what we are.
This does not mean that nothing will happen in the series. The events just are largely internal to the characters. It is difficult to describe such things.

The final has been disappointed
It is very exceptional that one of the hottest TV series today is progressing so slowly and introspectively. It is also exceptional that the series dares to focus on something that can only be described as subtle changes in the characters’ expressions.
Suddenly, I can’t name another series where Actors would do so much on their face and gestures. The speechless reactions of Isaacs, Posey, Goggins and Wood are alone that win prizes.
Patrick Schwarzenegger says he has tried to bring a new gear to Saxon’s character in the descriptions. Mike White interrupted him and reminded him that the series was set for a week. Nobody changes a week at all!
In place, junior has been frustrated by many, and the Monday’s final period did not provide relief. Forbes critics both described it as a \”crushing disappointment\”. In addition to slowness, the series was criticized for how some of the characters eventually remained completely statists, and not all plot yarns were tied to the bundle very successfully.
The unevenness is thought to be partly explained by the fact that the shooting has apparently had a controversial atmosphere that he does not return to the fourth season.
Mike White recently said in an interview with Variety that he does not understand the fact that there was no plot in the series.
– It never had it. Some of me want to say that brother, this is my series *vibe *. It’s about world construction. If you don’t want to bed with me, please exit.
Whatever the reasons, I enjoyed the fact that the series made surprising choices, jerked in place and offered unsatisfactory solutions. And I don’t remember, because last time I would have had such good debates about the TV series. Such is art at its best.
