Good news from Mexico: Butterfly doubling in the UNESCO World Heritage Site
The hiking monarch butterfly transforms into massive flocks, but in recent decades the number of species has decreased worryingly.
On Thursday, Mexico announced good news for the previously endangered butterfly species.
Wintering places for the wandering monarch butterfly in Mexico’s Mariposa Monarca biosphere area were doubled this winter from the previous year. In addition to good weather conditions, there is a long -term cooperation between Mexico, the United States and Canada.
During the winter 2024-2025, the monarch butterflies overwinter in 1.79 hectares, compared with only 0.9 hectares in the previous season.
Mariposa Monarca’s Biosphere Area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known specifically for its forests of the huge monarch butterflies that are red. In the winter of 1996-1997, the monarch butterflies covered an additional 18.19 hectares.
Vaeltavien monarkkiperhosten määrä on vähentynyt yli 85 prosentin 1990-luvulta lähtien. The reasons for the reduction have been the destruction of their habitats in forest felling, agricultural pesticides and climate change.
Until a few years ago, the species was very endangered, that is just a \”endangered species.\”
