A Greenlandic filmmaker has seen waste dumped into the sea near his family’s home
Greenlandic director Marc Fussing Rosbach’s film Civilized is a speech about what a mess we are when we recklessly consume natural resources.
The word “civilised” in Greenlandic is *atugartuunngorsagaq*. In English it means “one who spends a lot”.
Fussing Rosbach lives in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. The film was shot near his family home and his daughter’s kindergarten, which is located by the sea.
Near there, the filmmaker has seen oil and waste spilling into the ocean.
Indigenous peoples prove the effects of climate change in the front row. Changing the planetary climate system is a threat to indigenous peoples around the world, but especially in the Arctic. In Greenland, the effects are particularly evident in fishing and hunting.
The film discusses the price the indigenous peoples of the Arctic have to pay for technological development.
– A person who throws waste and chemicals where it hurts and splashes oil in the ocean is not very civilized.
Greenland of interest to the major powers
Greenland is now particularly interested in the Great powers, the United States and China. Its bedrock minerals are screamed at the European Union, the richest people in the world and the international miners. Greenland also has rich oil and gas reserves.
At the beginning of the previous*Akornatsinnitty*movie of Fuss Rosbach, the narrator says, “*There are many choices in life. Every man’s choice creates new paths. A person who is seeking power chooses an undeveloped path*. ”
By 1953, Greenland was a colonial of Denmark, which received autonomy in 1979. Self -government was expanded in 2009. Colonialism has a long shadow.
\”We have a strong group of artists who can influence the minds of a person – even politicians,\” says Fussing Rosbach.
Self-taught artist
The filmmaker has grown on the west coast of Greenland in Illulisat, 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle. Dad worked in the hotel industry and mother as a teacher. From his father, he got a camera and enthusiasm for storytelling and making music.
Marc Fussing Rosbach is a self -taught artist whose most important school has been YouTube and the Internet. As a teenager, he studied at the theater line in Denmark, but left his studies. At the same time, he became enthusiastic about learning how to make special effects.
Especially sci-fi and fantasy films such as *X-Men *, *Star Wars *, *Taru of the Lord of the Rings *and *Harry Potter *were an important part of Fusing Rosbach’s youth.
-For example, in X-Men, and the ice are fighting with each other. I wanted to make such special effects myself, he says.
Growing up, over -generational traumas and fears are themes that do not leave Fussing Rosbach alone. In his films, he has dealt with colonialism, the social conditions of Greenland, such as the lives of children’s children. The most recent climate change and over -consumption.
Anger, frustration and anxiety are sometimes good sparks for art. Fussing Rosbach says he has grown up as an anxious child. Although he has grown up in the world’s largest island, he was afraid of the sea as a child.
The films are born in the pressing of contradictory feelings. When Fussing Rosbach became a father, he was risen to the limited thoughts and feelings of life – the fear of death. As an artist, he has always been fascinated by the turning points of life that shape the direction of the future.
Greenlandic identity
Fussing Rosbach strongly hopes for Greenland’s independence. Above all, he says it is about preserving and safeguarding the Greenland identity and culture.
The majority of about 56,000 Greenlanders support independence. The extensive self-government rights allow Greenland to become independent if the residents decide in the referendum.
After a possible declaration of independence, the Greenland Parliament and the Danish government must still reach a joint agreement.
– I believe we are ready to independently become independent and leave Denmark. We do not want to break the connection with Denmark, but we want to build our society on the terms of the Greenland, says Fussing Rosbach.
The director’s *Civilized *movie is a philosophical speech on what kind of warfare a person who is recklessly consumed by natural resources is.
\”Is there a similar species somewhere in the cosmo?\ Asks the narrator of the movie.
According to the film director, the answers to the problems can be found inside.
– Modern man is like a different creature compared to the ancestors who only took nature from what they needed. We should learn from our ancestors.
