This is how Greenland thinks about Trump’s speeches
Trump covers an Arctic island from Denmark, a NATO alliance, whose residents want independence. Instead of Trump, the biggest concern is the young, says former Prime Minister.
Trump’s last week’s call with Frederiksen has been described as terrible and Trump’s intentions \”possibly very dangerous\”.
– Young people, says Kleist unexpectedly.
– They should soon lead this society. But we have a large number of 17-25 year olds who do not have any training, some do not even have an address. It worries me a lot, Kleist says.
Kleist is not very interested in Donald Trump. Trump has claimed that the Greenlanders want to connect the island to the United States. This Kleist does not believe.
– The fact that someone here is happy about Trump’s offer is rubbish. It is a low level of education and the fact that people do not know enough about the world, Kleist says.
Still, Kleist thinks that only Greenland people can decide on the fate of the island.
Although he himself is concerned about the social problems of Greenland, he thinks it is a speech that they would be a valid reason for patronage.
– Every country’s dream is to lead itself, and of course we are capable of it.
War is not likely to
There is a researcher at the University of Greenland, whose field is specifically self -government and security issues. Coincidentally, he is also Finnish.
During World War II, the United States had about ten bases in Greenland. Now there is only one of them, the Lituffik space base, which was previously known as Thule’s air base.
Ackrén points out that Trump has a certain provocative way to speak.
– And of course, the speeches have to be taken seriously, but on the other hand, they may have risen a little too big.
In recent years, Greenland has become more and more oriented to the west, says Ackrén. The leadership of the country has sought to cooperate with the United States and Canada.
As a defense partner, the Greenlanders are most confident in NATO, according to a study published in December. Less than one fifth think that security issues should first and foremost rely on US support.
Ackrén is one of the authors of the study and points out that the survey was done before Trump began to crave Greenland for the second time. At that time, one third of the respondents considered the threats to Greenland’s safety.
Kuupik Kleist also thinks that Greenland needs partners.
– But the fairway should be diplomatic. If the United States wants more presence, it must be negotiated, Kleist says.
About Trump’s threats he has a heavy opinion:
Superpower struggle threat on the Arctic
Still, Denmark seems to have been startled by Trump’s speeches.
On Tuesday, the country’s defense minister said that Denmark will strengthen its defense in Greenland.
According to Maria Ackrén, the risks in the Arctic are primarily related to a superpower struggle.
However, China and Russia are not Hamu Greenland, but their focus is on the rest of the Arctic, says Ackrén.
China has had different aspirations in Greenland, but none of them have progressed.
– China sees first and foremost a trading partner in Greenland, and Russia’s presence here is limited. It works more in the Barents Sea.
Movement in the Arctic Sea areas has increased in recent years.
– There are Russian submarines here too. The United States have also begun to spin at the Faroe Islands. So there is this kind of military guard, says Ackrén.
However, the researcher does not believe in the war, but he thinks some new cold war is possible.
– As long as Greenland is in NATO, it’s pretty safe here.
Independence requires money
In addition to Trump’s bid and member of Denmark, Greenland has the third option: independence.
According to Kleist, independence is the power of nature that one day can no longer be resisted, but which can not be rushed.
– We do not talk about independence every day, that conversation is mainly in the media. We have much more to do than to get independence.
There are minerals in Greenland soil, but it costs to dig them. Starting the mining industry also requires roads and ports.
In Kleist’s opinion, Greenland should work with anyone who agrees to invest in the country. Does he also mean Russia?
– No Russia, they have different values.
But China Kleist even says he has been in Greenland.
– The EU asked me to keep the Chinese out of Greenland. I said it can only work in one way: by placing it yourself. And they haven’t done it.
Chinese companies have been involved in the search for minerals, but no mines have been established.
Trump is also believed to be the rare earthworms in Greenland, which are needed for high -tech products and, among other things, batteries.
Kleist points out that even though Greenland belongs to Denmark, it has the right to decide on its mine itself. Trump does not seem to understand or know, Kleist says.
In his view, the future of Greenland can giggle in one direction or another – but not to the third.
– How are the land and its residents buy? That is not the case today.
