The planning of the new theater facilities is scheduled to last until the beginning of 2024.

According to the project plan, the new theater facilities could be inaugurated in 2027.

The Espoo City Theater will get new premises in Tapiola, Espoo’s cultural centre. The Espoo city council voted 67-8 in favor of the new theater hall project plan on Monday evening.

According to the city’s announcement, the construction of the new facilities planned as an extension of the current cultural center could begin in 2024, when it would be ready for the fall season of 2027. The facilities are planned to the south of Tapionkentä in place of the temporary padel and basketball courts.

Currently, the Kaupunginteatteri organizes performances in the cultural center Louhisali and in Revontulihalli, about a kilometer away from the cultural center. According to the city, the Aurora Hall facilities have reached the end of their life cycle, and they have been discussed for decades.

In the project plan, the total cost of the construction project is estimated at 60–66 million euros. The price is preliminary and takes into account the effect of inflation.

The council decided that the new building will be designed as an independently functioning entity so that its use can continue during the renovation of the old part of the cultural center. There is no timetable for the overhaul yet, and it is not planned to be done in connection with the expansion.

The purpose is also to plan the adjacent Kulttuuriaukio so that there are facilities for organizing various events.
