The housing shortage in Lapland hinders the development of tourism and the hiring of workers

A young woman smiles at the camera and strokes a cat that is lying contentedly on a climbing frame in the apartment. in the background you can see a kitchenette with yellow cabinet doors.
Suvi Hänninen moved from Raahe to Rovaniemi for seasonal work. A studio apartment was found for him and the cat, but not within walking distance of the workplace. Hänninen has his own car, which he drives to work.

An apartment is often found for seasonal workers through social media. Roommates and haggling over the location of the apartment help, but they are not suitable for everyone.

Thousands of workers arrive from different parts of Finland and around the world to work in Lapland for the winter season. Although the housing shortage is also a problem in other sectors, it especially affects those coming to work in the tourism industry.

– At first it seemed really difficult. When I browsed the websites, I couldn’t really find something suitable for my price range. Through Facebook, I quite easily managed to find an apartment for myself, says Suvi Hänninen.

Hänninen set the pain threshold for rent at 480 euros, and the most important of the criteria is related to a furry roommate.

– Mainly the fact that it’s not just some 20-square-meter studio apartment when you have a cat. No other criteria really.

A big congress and a spa hotel planned for the city’s parade ground are supposed to be brought to the city board’s consideration in December.

At the Rovaniemi City Council meeting in December, the plan is to present the long-planned Valionranta site plan change and land lease agreement. After that, the formula goes to the council, which makes the final decision.

– This has been carried forward in good spirit with the city. This has lasted a long time, e.g. due to the corona pandemic, states CEO of Lapland Hotels Ari Vuorentaus.

Lapland Hotels is planning a large congress hotel and spa as well as three apartment buildings for the area. The initial cost of the investment is more than 100 million euros and the construction will take several years.

– Planning takes time and more detailed work begins when the formula is legally binding, says Ari Vuorentau.

There are so many tourists that Tampere is threatened with a shortage of places to stay – hotel: \”We hope the competition would be equal, now it is not\”

Christian Borg, commercial director of the Scandic Hotels chain, says that the requirements for hotel and private accommodation are different. Therefore, the competition is not equal for him. Stock photo.

The city of Tampere encourages city residents to rent their apartments to tourists. The increase in Airbnb accommodation can be a threat to the hotel industry, estimates the hotel chain’s commercial manager.

Scandic, which runs six hotels in Tampere, understands the city’s call to increase accommodation capacity for a single event peak.

More generally, the increase in short-term private accommodation can be a threat to the industry.

Borg considers it unfair if a private person is able to establish accommodation facilities with different legalities.

– You can easily open a home-like accommodation, while a hotel has to go through a long process. The requirements should be equal. For example, the safety factors on the private side should be looked into.

Mikkeli airport is being approached for electric flying and drone testing: \”South Savo has the quietest airspace in Europe,\” says Miksei’s CEO

Mikkeli airport is located near the 5-tie and the road to Jyväskylä.

The state granted half a million euros to maintain Mikkeli airport. Thanks to it, new activities can be developed in the field while waiting for electric aircraft to enter the market.

In its supplementary budget, the government granted a total of one million euros for the development of tourism in Mikkeli and Lappeenranta. In practice, the money is intended for maintaining airports.

Maintaining the field costs 350,000 euros per year. The money goes to, among other things, having staff on site and plowing the field in winter.

Negotiations with three different actors

The city already has clear plans for the development of the airport. According to Timo Paak, they are currently negotiating with three different operators. Companies develop electronic flying and drone technology.

– South Savo has the quietest airspace in Europe. You can test things here, which could be very difficult to organize in Central Europe, for example. They are related to drone flying, Paakki says.

Tampere encourages city residents to rent their apartments short-term, the Airbnb host was delighted: \”The city has apparently turned its tide\”

In Tampere, occasional short-term Airbnb renting of an apartment is allowed. According to the permit architect, most of the city’s Airbnb offering is unauthorized professional accommodation.

In January, the city decided to tighten the conditions for short-term rentals. The instructions of the building control, environmental health and rescue services are still valid.

Last week, Tampere announced that it would encourage people to rent apartments for short periods, especially during events or during the holiday season. The reason is that Tampere’s hotel prices are skyrocketing and there is a shortage of accommodation, especially during events.

– This is good news! Even when I called my housing company and the city’s building control a week ago, the message was completely different. The city has apparently turned its back, Katariina Tala rejoices.

He does not see that, for example, Airbnb competes with hotels.

Many groups of friends and colleagues celebrate Christmas after the coronation break.

The Christmas season looks set to be a success, but rising energy prices, among other things, will cast a shadow over the coming months in the hospitality sector.

Christmas parties are back to almost the same pattern as before the corona epidemic. The Hämeenmaa cooperative store, Vanajanlinna and Mukkula Manor report that demand for Christmas services has returned close to 2019 levels.

Rising costs hit accommodation and restaurant businesses

A year ago, the interest rate situation started to deteriorate just during the Christmas season and restaurants were subject to interest rate passport requirements towards the end of November, resulting in cancellations of Christmas reservations.

This Christmas season looks set to be a success, but new uncertainties are casting a shadow over the coming months for the hospitality sector.

– Here, like everyone else, we are fighting against high energy prices. There is a big question mark, what the amount below the line will be this year, says Pasi Jääskeläinen, chairman of Maran Päijät-Häme.

Catch and excitement addict anglers Iida Issakakis, 18 – Fishing competitions could bring money to regions, but there are no takers

Iida Issakainen is standing on the beach pebbles of Pyhäselkä.
According to Iida Issakainen, fishing as a form of competition should be marketed more to attract more new enthusiasts. “By developing different applications for the sport, young people could also be inspired.

For the first time in the world, the University of Eastern Finland conducted a study to find out what motivates participants and what kind of experiences they have in fishing competitions.

– There are probably not even five young women. For some reason, there is no interest in competitive fishing. This is something that should be addressed through marketing and the development of different applications.

The University of Eastern Finland has studied the spending and experiential values of participants in fishing competition trips. This is the first time that motivating factors for participants have been studied.

Research focusing on the motivation of participants in fishing competitions and the analysis of the experiences they expect from competitions has not been done before, even in the world.

Competitors want the arrangements to be fair and work. For example, maintaining physical and mental health is also important for those participating in fishing competitions.
