The outlook for the construction industry is not fading yet in Päijät-Hämee: \”The employment situation in Lahti is good\”

The renovation of Lahti City Hall is a project worth more than 20 million euros. The work is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2023.

The rise in costs has put some public projects on hold, but the rise in energy prices may bring new work to renovation construction.

The work situation in the construction industry is still good in Päijät-Hämee, but the outlook may change in the coming months.

The business survey of the Confederation of Finnish Business EK from October shows that there are clearly more layoff plans in the construction industry in the whole country than in other industries. 44 percent of the construction companies that responded to the survey anticipate laying off their employees in the next six months.

Winter seasonal unemployment hasn’t started yet. For example, the facade works are still ongoing.

– A few school sites will be completed in Lahti in the near future. If the companies do not get a new replacement, then there may be layoffs, continues Lindqvist.

Lindqvist also closely monitors, among other things, the interest rate level.

– Interest rates have still been reasonable, but if interest rates rise, it will curb new production.

Repair construction is increasing

The increase in costs also brings more uncertainty to the construction industry. The rise in energy prices may also have an effect on employment, when building societies invest in energy efficiency.

– In connection with repair construction, more and more heat recovery systems are made, for example. In the construction industry’s own business cycle surveys, renovation construction has been a growth industry, says Jukka Lempiäinen, Regional Manager of the Building Construction Industry.

Lempiäinen and Rakennusliito’s Jari Lindqvist are both of the opinion that the arrival of Fazer’s new confectionery factory in Lahti will stimulate housing and workplace construction.

Fazer is scheduled to make a final investment decision at the beginning of next year.
