Where is the line between necessary rules and unreasonable restrictions? We are talking about the rules and punishments set for teenagers.
When the teenager in the family doesn’t take care of the housework or refers to the coming home times with a glove, the parents may feel pain. What to do with a young person who does not follow the family rules?
Even if the rules cause slackness, it is the parents’ job to set limits for the young person. Without them, the young person’s growth is unsafe and he is left too much on his own.
The purpose of the rules is to ensure that the young person gets enough sleep, for example. If a young person breaks the rules, it is important to discuss the matter with the young person and think about suitable sanctions if necessary.
– I don’t like the word punishment. The purpose is to teach that actions have consequences. If you don’t go to work, there will be no salary in the account. If you don’t follow the time to come home, something will follow, says Lehtoranta.
Limits must not be unreasonable
A young person can feel miserable if their friends have more freedom than themselves. However, each family can agree on the rules among themselves. Parents can have very different views on what is acceptable.
Lehtoranta considers it valuable if a parent is able to discuss the rules set for young people with other parents.
– It’s worth sniffing, which is in line with the spirit of the times, that the rules are not completely unreasonable. If the limits are completely unreasonable, they will cause more resistance.
Parents have to balance between the rules set for the young person and freedom. The task is not easy, and it often causes headaches.
