Swans are counted at the turn of the week – five years since the last swan count

The autumn population of Finnish swans consists of pairs of whooper swans breeding in Finland and their chicks, as well as non-breeding birds and Russian swans migrating through Finland.

At the end of next week, a swan survey will be organized, where data will be collected on the number of swans and their resting places before the birds’ autumn migration.

Bird Life Finland organizes the swan gathering during the weekend to gather information about Finland’s autumn swan population and the places where swans gather before their autumn migration to Western Europe.

In the past, a similar swan observation campaign was organized five years ago and approximately 50,000 song swans were observed, and the autumn population of swans was estimated to be 65,000 to 70,000 swans.

On the coast of the Pärämere, Liminganlahti and its surroundings are also an important resting place for swans. For example, according to the Tiira service, which collects bird sightings, a flock of about 650 whooper swans was seen on Siikajoki on Thursday.

You can participate in the swan viewing by reporting your swan sighting for the coming weekend at www.joutsenbongaus.fi. You can follow the results of the swan dance on the event’s results page.
