Electric city bikes are in use in Lahti. Public transport is also partly electrified.

The city wants to find out why people of working age choose private cars for their work trips. Along with energy, traffic produces Lahti’s biggest emissions.

The city of Lahti is applying for EU money to promote sustainable commuter transport.

Lahti has been selected as one of Europe’s 100 carbon-neutral and smart cities, and the European Commission has opened a call for related funding. In Lahti, the biggest sources of emissions are the energy sector and transport, especially private cars.

– We want to find out the reasons why people of working age decide to drive to work in the morning. It can be for example exporting to children’s hobbies, own hobbies, going to the store or something else combined with going to work.

Once the reasons have been clarified, the city can try in a positive way to encourage residents to move more sustainably, such as walking, cycling or public transport.

In addition to the city of Lahti, Päijät-Sote, LUT University, LAB University of Applied Sciences and companies in the region are participating in the pilot.
