Riso’s beach area in Vaasa is being renovated.

The avifauna of Sundominlahti will be improved by removing a significant part of Risön’s reeded shore area. The goal is an open, wide coastal meadow up to the water line, which could increase the area’s avifauna potential by improving the habitat of several different bird species.

Reduced or endangered bird species nesting in open coastal meadows include e.g. Mallard, ruffed grouse, southern plover, moorhen, liro, red-footed wagtail, black-tailed godwit, yellow wagtail and meadow hornet.

The restoration work on Risön’s beach area that is being done now is carried out by mowing and shredding reeds with special equipment modified for this purpose. The operational area is approximately 40 hectares.

The renovation work will take approximately one to two weeks. Efforts are made to avoid disturbances to the recreational use of the area during the works.

The restoration is done in cooperation with the Helmi habitat program and the CoastNet LIFE project.
