The freight station, which has overcome the threat of demolition, will soon open as a concert and event hall for more than a thousand people. Next year, for example, Saimaa, Aikakone, Ismo Alanko and Yona will perform on the station.
The threat of demolition and the people’s movement, the legendary move to 28 meters away.
Few buildings have evoked as many emotions in Finland as the Art Nouveau-style goods station in Tampere, completed in 1907.
The renovated station now gets a new life as a concert and event hall for more than a thousand people.
Concerts, corporate events, fairs and festivals can be organized in the hall.
Tavara-asema opens its doors in January with 15 events. It is part of the whole of Tampere Kulttuurikamari Oy, which also includes Tullikamari’s Pakkahuone and Klubi.
The loft can accommodate around 300 people and will have its own bar. The space can also be used as a stand for minors at permitted gigs. Advanced technology will be added to the hall, which enables even demanding visual events.
The goods station is also rented for private events and various events are held there.
– A K40 disco is coming in February. Even younger people can come there, says Janne Laurila.
Tavara-asema serves as a concert venue during the Tullikamar renovation.
The gig band is grateful for the new space
– Surely something spectacular will be developed here.
According to Ylinen, the new place attracts about as many people as Tampere-talo and Tullikamari, so the concert venue looks good.
The goods station has an interesting history
The brick building was once saved from the threat of demolition thanks to the people’s movement.
It became national news in the summer of 2020 at the latest, when the stripped house was pushed 28 meters away due to a bend causing traffic jams.
The million-dollar costs of the move have sparked a debate in Tampere.
