Police chased a stolen van in Lahti – the driver caused numerous incidents

In the morning rush hour, a driver fleeing the police drove at high speed in the oncoming lane and in green areas. The man, armed with a steel weapon, was under the influence of drugs.

Police were involved in a violent chase in Lahti on Wednesday morning. The driver of a van fleeing a police patrol caused several incidents as he sped away from the officers.

According to a report from the emergency centre at around 7.30 a.m., a van stolen from Helsinki that morning had been seen in the Lahti area. According to a police release, the stolen vehicle was spotted in the yard of a petrol station in Renkomäki, where the chase started.

A van travelling at high speed in the urban area of Laune caused danger to other road users by driving in the wrong lane, in green areas and by running red traffic lights.

According to the police release, the chase finally ended when the van stopped in the yard of a property located in Launee. A man in his forties was arrested, and the result of a rapid drug test on him was positive.

During the security check, the police found a bladed weapon in the man’s possession and property stolen from the van. The man does not have a valid driver’s license.

A criminal report was registered for the incident for theft of a motor vehicle, gross endangerment of traffic safety, drunk driving, driving a vehicle without a license, assaulting the police, and possession of an object capable of harming another.
