The Tiernapoics return to the Rotuaar in November: a corona prevented the public event on the last two occasions

Tiernapoikastatas in Oulu, whose characters have face masks
More than a year ago, the characters in the Oulu Tiernapoika statue were fitted with face masks. It is precisely because of the crown that the singing competition has not been open to the public since 2019.

Last year, the Tierna Foundation, which organises the Tierna Boy competitions, ruled that the King of Murjaani’s face could no longer be painted black, as it has been linked to racist blackface activities.

After a break of a few years, the audience will once again be able to watch the Tiernapoi teams compete in Oulu Rotuaar, singing and acting. The teams will compete in Oulu on 26 and 27 November.

The last Tiernapoika competitions open to the public were held in 2019.

In 2020, no competitions were held due to the interest rate. Last year, it was finally possible to hold the races in a closed area, in accordance with health and safety procedures set by the authorities.

The Tiernasäätiö, which organizes the Tiernapoika competitions, ruled last year that the face of the King of Murjaani should no longer be painted black, as it is associated with racist blackface activities.

The Tiernasäätiö says in its press release that it wants to enliven youth culture and enable young people to enjoy singing, acting and performing. Tiernapoji have a long tradition and are part of Finnish Christmas culture, especially in the Oulu region.

There are three series in the competition. They are traditional, common and adaptations. The best three of each series will be awarded, as well as the best four role performances. Registration for the competition has opened on the tiernakaupunki.fi website.
