A real boat curiosity glided into Jyväskylä harbour in a car – the boat designed by Alvar Aalto will soon be on display for all to see

A shed is being built at the head of the harbour to house the boat, built in the 1950s, which will eventually be open to the public through large windows. The building will also house a small exhibition about the boat.

The transport of the unique boat arrived in port at 9.30 am on Monday.

The boat is becoming a public attraction at the head of the harbour.

A boat shed has been built next to the sauna restaurant Viilu, which will open in early summer 2022.

The building for the boat is still somewhat incomplete and, for example, the windows will not be installed until the boat is in place under the canopy.

The boat will be located next to the sauna restaurant that opened in early summer.

When the boat is in its shed protected from the wind and weather, it is, among other things, painted. Other parts that belong to it, such as pillows and lamps, are also brought along with the boat. The restoration work of the boat’s cabin was already done last winter.

The Alvar Aalto Foundation estimates that the boat will be available for the public to see in November.

According to Lindh, the importance of the boat in Aalto’s production is increased by the fact that it is the only boat designed by a world-famous architect.

– Boats interested him and he would have certainly wanted to make the best possible boat. It turned out to be good-looking, but there are many opinions about seaworthiness, Lindh describes.

The purpose-built shed for Aalto’s boat is still a little unfinished.

The boat was launched for the first time in 1955. Lindh states that the value of the boat is also increased by the fact that Alvar Aalto and his wife Elissa Aalto used the boat a lot.

– It was used in the summer in Muuratsalo, shopping trips were made, and the last day of the summer season transfers from Säynätsalo.

The public cannot touch the unique creation in the exhibition pavilion, but the boathouse will be a place to peek into the interior of the boat.
