The male seal caught in the net weighed 28 kilos and was about one metre long. According to Metsähallitus, it was a cuckoo born last winter.

A fisherman informed Metsähallitus about a Saimaa ringed seal caught in a fishing net on Friday evening.

The male seal caught in the net at Haukivi in Savonlinna weighed 28 kilos and was about one metre long, which means it is a cuckoo born last winter.

Metsähallitus recovered the seal in a freezer and will later send it to the Finnish Food Authority for an autopsy.

The fisherman’s five-meter-high walleye net was at a depth of about 20 meters. Its knot spacing was 50 millimeters and the thread thickness was 0.17 millimeters. According to Metsähallitus, the fisherman regretted what happened and decided to remove the nets from Saimaa, at least for this autumn.

The Metsähallitus asks you to report dead and injured Saimaa roe deer immediately to the number 0206 39 5000. If a dead roe deer is found in the water, you must make sure that the waves do not take it away.
