After nesting, the bird units that have been nibbled by people may have been left in poor condition by the winged tenant. Here are some tips for thorough fall maintenance.
1. Lower the bunk or get a ladder
Bird perches are often placed at a level higher than normal human working height. If the pole is orthodoxly tied to a tree or post with a string, it should be lowered for the duration of the operations.
If you can’t lower the box, you should use a ladder. Cleaning is easier if there is not only a button feel but also a visual connection to the inside of the bin.
A good time to clean the nests is late autumn after nesting. The first frosts make it clear about any parasites and fleas that might be in the nest, and they won’t jump on top of the cleaner.
2. Remove the roof and check the situation
The birdhouse is usually cleaned from the top or bottom. The roof may be attached with iron wire or string, which is detached and the roof is lifted off. When cleaning the underside, the base is naturally removed.
A look inside reveals the situation. If the nesting has been successful, there is only a nesting bowl inside, which the bird has collected in its bed. It can also be used to determine which species of winged bird has inhabited the nest. For example, if there is moss on the bottom of a small-holed pot, the tenant has probably had a blue tit.
3. Remove the debris and check the condition of the pot
The birds always make a new nest from scratch, even if the old nest in the shed could be suitable for them. Old nests can accumulate on top of each other in the box. At worst, the new resident will no longer be able to nest inside.
Old nesting materials can also contain parasites and collect moisture, which can hinder the survival of the chicks. Sometimes dead chicks can also remain in the nest. These will all be deleted.
It is also important to check the condition of the nest, especially the roof, because if it leaks, the nest is easily ruined and can become moldy. Although you can easily get a new roof from a piece of board.
Then the box is fixed at roughly the same level as before and we wait for spring and new residents.
At this stage, a wise post fixer might place a small branch or a thin block of wood between the post and the tree. In this way, the water running down the frame does not moisten the living space.
4. Pöntöiling is worth it
So how much does the birdhouse produce?
Birds that nest in nests have three to eight chicks, depending on the species. If you calculate an average of five chicks per year, one coop has helped 50 birds into the world and provided them with a first home.
If there are ten coops in the yard or nearby nature, the output is already 500 birds. It’s not a little.
