The era of openness is over in facilities that are important for security of supply. In Lahti, the doors of both the electricity and water companies have been broken.
Water and electricity companies have tightened their security measures due to the world political situation. Last week, Yle reported on the cities’ preparation for security threats, but the companies provide very few details.
– Safety communication is a double-edged sword. I myself have always been in favor of open communication, but now because of the world situation, people have woken up to what is worth saying and what is not, says Voutilainen.
The Firewall 1.0 project is ongoing in the municipal association, the task of which is to find out and develop the preparedness for cyber security risks of critical infrastructure under the control of municipalities, especially water supply and energy facilities.
Project manager Voutilainen understands that safety measures are not a big fuss.
– Municipalities generally need to know that the companies responsible for security of supply have an obligation to prepare. If we go to a more detailed level, there is a chance that too many details will be revealed.
In Voutilainen’s opinion, however, informing on a general level is worthwhile, because with positive security communication, you can also tell the other party planning a threat that you are being vigilant.
Preparation costs
Preparing and increasing security is not free. Jani Voutilainen, the project manager of the municipal association, believes that the realities of the business economy will quickly be encountered in preparation.
– Backup power machines currently cost a lot. You don’t necessarily want to buy them, because the real need for them may be once every ten years, if even then, says Voutilainen.
Lahti Energia’s Haikarainen says that monitoring is also done in close cooperation with the authorities.
