The Academy of Finland’s new four-year funding period for Antarctic research began last year. The trip, on the other hand, starts on November 8, and the expedition will return home next February.
The Finnish Antarctic Expedition, or FINNARP 2022, is preparing for this upcoming expedition at a training camp in Tuusula, says the Finnish Meteorological Institute. The expedition heads to Antarctica.
In Tuusula, we pack the necessary equipment and study safety-related issues.
The research trip has been prepared for two years already. The researchers who are going now couldn’t make the trip last year because of the corona virus.
The expedition heads to the research station Aboa in November
The expedition will start its long journey towards the Antarctic and the Finnish Antarctic research station Aboa on November 8, 2022 and will return to Finland in February next year.
Half of the expedition members are researchers and half are staff responsible for the research station’s technology, maintenance and medical care, a total of ten people.
Snow and ice researchers and geologists from the Meteorological Institute, the Natural History Museum and the Land Surveying Institute are going on the trip.
There are several different research stations in Antarctica
Aboa and its surroundings have, among other things, weather stations, a seismometer that measures earth and ice tremors, a GPS station that supports geodetic surveys, and stations that measure the physical properties of snow and ice.

Finland is a member of the Antarctic Treaty. A prerequisite for this is the implementation of significant research activities in the area.
