The summer was quiet, but now interesting films are flooding the screens – we listed the most important premieres of the fall

August’s audience figures fell by half, but autumn looks bright again in terms of movies. The climax of the year is the sequel to Avatar, which was supposed to hit theaters already eight years ago.

A blonde haired woman in a red turk and leotard surrounded by male soldiers.
Sara Melleri plays Kikka in the film directed by Anna Paavilainen, whose premiere was moved from February to October due to the corona pandemic.

The summer was lean in terms of premiere films. Good big Hollywood hits were few and far between, as evidenced by the fact that the one released in May was still hanging in the top five of the viewership statistics in Finland as well as in the United States in September.

The August harvest was particularly bad in Finland, and it was reflected in the viewership figures. They were worse than, for example, a year earlier, when strict corona restrictions affected theater operations in several locations.

However, autumn looks brighter. has already received more than 70 thousand viewers.

During the rest of the year, everything from big superhero spectacles to domestic arthouse films can be found in cinemas. We selected ten important premieres from the program.

The content warning at the beginning is not taken out of the blue: in the film we see a lot of dead bodies.

A man dressed in a white collar sits with a monk in a dark room.
Tukdam explores the space between life and death.

The documentary tries to find out, using the methods of Western medicine, whether such an intermediate state between life and death really exists. The question expands to \”what is consciousness?\” Director Coleman is currently doing a doctorate in medical anthropology on the subject at the University of California, Berkeley.

Crimes of the Future (October 7)

57-year-old Viola Davis has received praise for her role in the action adventure The Woman King.

Davis’ performance and Prince-Bythewood’s direction have been praised, and 94 percent of film reviews listed on The Rotten Tomatoes are positive. The director has said that he was influenced by, among other things.

Avatar: The Way of Water (14.12.)

A blue humanoid figure rides along the surface of the sea on a winged creature.
Avatar: The Way of Water is one of the most anticipated films of the year.

At the time of writing, only a short trailer of one and a half minutes has been released for the film, based on which it is difficult to say anything about the plot. The lush scenery naturally looks great – Cameron has been interested in developing film technology throughout his career, and the original still looks better than a lot of Hollywood movies today.

And the Avatar saga is not limited to these. The third part has been filmed, and the fourth is currently being filmed. A fifth is also planned.
