Plans to turn the former ice cellar into a hotel have been shelved. As the name suggests, ice and foodstuffs have been stored in the cellar.
The Hanko City Council has decided to remove the plan change of the Hanko Casino ice cellar area from the city’s zoning program 2024–2026. The change would have made it possible to build a hotel on the plot.
The matter was first reported by Svenska Yle.
Hanko’s environmental committee decided to postpone the planning of the ice cellar area earlier in the fall. At the meeting held on Monday, October 15, the board’s line was continued and the hotel plans were completely shelved for the next three years.
The city of Hanko needs more accommodation capacity. However, the plan to build a hotel on the neighboring plot of Hanko Casino has not pleased has collected 1,300 signatures.
Hanko Casino was completed in 1879. The park surrounding it has so far remained untouched.
