Next year, the square, which is currently being renovated, will be the site of a sculpture in black gabron by Korpilahti, informally titled “Like one of us”.
The title of the work is “*As one of us “*. Heino presented a scale model of the sculpture at the Riihimäki Art Museum on Wednesday. At the same time, he showed a series of sketches of how the work, which will come to Riihimäki next year, was created.
Blasted lemon
Heino originally drew a lemon, which he chopped up step by step and removed the flesh. The remaining rind and rim are clearly visible in the work in progress for Riihimäki, right down to the stem of the fruit.
Aaron Heino’s formal language is characterised by seeking ideas from the organic world.
On Wednesday, Heino said that the other side of the sculpture is smooth, and it can sparkle a little in the light. The other side is treated rough.
The work is one passer-by among others in the square. Its roughness refers to the inner world of a person, which is rarely visible on the outside.
Currently, the artist is working on a 16-ton stone block, from which a sculpture weighing just under seven tons remains. Heino estimates that about 1,200 working hours go into the stone work.
The price of the work is around 80,000 euros. The money comes from the Art in the Development of Public Areas section of the municipal engineering investment program.
The work commissioned for Riihimäki continues Aaron Heino’s skillful way of carving stone.
A couple of years ago, he had an exhibition at Emma in Espoo, where the artist’s style of favoring a rough treated stone surface, so that the other side of the work can be polished to a shine, was very visible.
Just like in the sculpture coming to Riihimäki, which could also be described as a citrus fruit blown up.
