So far this year, 35 dead Saimaa ringed seals have been reported to the stock monitoring, nine of which have died in fishing traps.

A male Saimaa ringed seal was found drowned in a pike net in Puumala on Thursday.

The male six born this year weighed about 22 kg and was 96 cm long. This is the ninth dead seal caught by Metsähallitus this year. Seven of these have died in nets.

The catch was located in a fishing restricted area and was in compliance with the Regulation. The depth of the trap was approximately 25 metres.

– Networks are always dangerous. It will certainly be considered again the next time a new regulation is prepared, says Riikka Alakoski, a special expert on nature conservation at Metsähallitus.

This year, 35 dead Saimaa grouse have already come to the attention of the monitoring department, of which nine have died in fishing traps, seven of them in fishing nets.

The deaths dim the record lunar year and can slow down the stock’s recovery, as only a part of the mortality becomes known.
