Metsähallitus is considering what to do about the paths that have been trampled on, for example, in Kellostapuli and Keimiötunturi, so that nature does not suffer from hiking.
Metsähallitus plans to draw up a new management and use plan for Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park.
According to Metsähallitus, the plan coordinates the objectives and needs of nature conservation, recreation and other uses for the next 10-15 years. The current management and use plan for the national park was completed in 2008.
According to Sulkava, the decisions aim to guide hiking so that nature does not suffer. For example, in the case of the path to the top of Kellostapul in Ylläs, it must be decided whether to make it an official route or to block access to the top altogether.
According to Sulkava, there is a similar situation in Keimiötunturi in Pallas, which has already been discussed during the preparation of the previous plan. However, building an official route would be so expensive that it has been postponed for now.
Metsähallitus consults the area’s users and stakeholders such as residents, councils and entrepreneurs when preparing a new management and use plan. According to it, it is important to protect, for example, Sámi culture and conditions for reindeer husbandry in the area.
The new care and use plan is to be completed next summer.
