The transfer of state subsidies from the City of Kemi to the Theatre Association is a prerequisite for the continuation of theatre activities. A decision is expected in the coming weeks.
According to Honkonen, the ministry has had a rosier picture of the situation in the theatre than reality. However, he confirms that the Meri-Lap Theatre Association, which was set up in the summer, is eligible for state aid.
– As long as the new method is eligible for state aid, I see no reason why it should not continue to receive state aid for theatre activities. So our understanding is that the support can continue,” says Honkonen.
– The event provided good ideas on how theatre activities could be sustained beyond municipal borders in the future. I think that’s a good idea. Of course, solutions have to be made locally,” adds Honkonen.
According to the minister, the state must continue to have certain ways of supporting cultural activities and the level of culture funding should be maintained. However, he emphasizes that the most essential thing is that there is enough local will to stick to their cultural activities.
– The locals must have such a spirit that we need culture. It creates that vitality and attraction for the locality. In addition, it also employs people outside the cultural and artistic professions.
In the future, the most important prerequisites for Kemi’s theater operations are a reasonably sized auditorium, a partnership agreement between the city and the association, and the transfer of the state’s share to the association. All of these should be answered and resolved within the next few weeks.
